What Would We Do Without Our Volunteers!!

October 12, 2009

VCS Libraries have always been fortunate to have outstanding individuals helping out @ our libraries.  This year is no exception.  Thanks to each and every one of you for taking time out of your busy schedules to help out!  Take a look at this year’s star performers…..

Samantha Keeney takes time off from summer vacation to help get the HHES Library looking bright and cheerful for the 2009-2010 school year!

Once again  Judy Prevost takes time out of her busy day to volunteer .  This year she took on decorating the Battle of the Books area of the HHES Library.  This year’s battle theme, “Catch a Dragon by the Tale “,  will have the icing on the cake as Judy designs a castle on the back wall of the battle book area.

Pam Verfaillie is sharing her talent by organizing an Olympic Challenge for HHES.

Thanks Pam for sharing your creative flair!

Amanda Stahley is a familiar face at both the VHS and HHES Libraries.  Amanda, now a student at Prince William Community College, comes in a few hours a week between classes to assist in our libraries.

Mo Radatitch has been helping out Friday mornings at the HHES Library for several years.  Mo assists by putting books away and checking materials out to staff and students when needed.

Definitely not a new face at HHES, but a new one helping out at our library is our very own, newly retired, Kim Michaud.  Kim recently began coming in Fridays to assist putting books away and assisting students and staff when possible.

Read For The Record is a program sponsored by Jumpstart.  Jumpstart’s goal is to  work toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed.

To support Jumpstart’s goal of reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar to as many children across the country as possible on October 8, 2009,  the HHES Library Club presented a reader’s theater play to HHES students.

Wrapping Up This Year’s Battle Book Program

April 20, 2009

Our annual Battle Book Slumber Party wrapped up last night. 21 kids were able to attend this year’s event. The students had to read all 15 of the books and receive 80% or higher on their AR quizzes.

We started out the evening swimming, followed by a school wide Easter Egg Hunt. Bookmark crafts, time in the gym, the computer lab, and lots of great snacks pretty much took care of the evening. We wrapped things up with three rounds of Sardines, a hide and seek game that covered  the whole school.

Great Snacks!

HHES Library, Valdez Literacy Council and AR Coordinator Team Up!

October 3, 2008

Thursday evening Ann Hajost, the new Accelerated Reader Coordinator, and the HHES Library staff teamed up to introduce parents to this fun reading incentive program as well as introduce a few valuable websites that encourage the love of reading. We also wanted to welcome parents to our beautiful library.

Thanks to the support of the Valdez Literacy Council, refreshments were enjoyed by all at the event.  Here’s President, Kristie Cranor, serving some yummy goodies!

You never know what kind of turn out you will get for an evening event, but this time we were pleased.  Over 25 parents and children came for the short 1 hour event.

Once Ann had a chance to model how easy taking an Accelerated Reader quiz is, parents and children read a book together, nibbled on cookies, and took an AR quiz.

Here’s a mother-daughter duo taking one of the quizzes on a library computer.

A drawing for 2 Webkins was a major hook for some coming to the event.

Here are our two proud Webkin winners!

A Big Thanks To The Valdez Museum!

August 25, 2008

The Valdez City School Libraries would like to take this opportunity to thank the Valdez Museum for donating to each school library a copy of the recently produced DVD, “Between the Glacier and the Sea”. “Told through personal accounts of survivors, this movie dispels myths and reveals untold stories that provide answers to why the city of Valdez was built in such a precarious location…”

Thanks Steve for your hard work with the production of this important resource about the history of our community!
