Hear Ye! Hear Ye! The 2009-2010 Battle of the Books has officially begun!
In The Kingdom Of Hermon Hutchens many lads and lasses are reading this year’s designated battle books. We already have several knights & maidens that have reached the goal to attend the annual swimming party held in the month of November. These loyal subjects have reading 7 of this year’s 15 battle books and received 80% or better on AR quizzes.
A big cheer to the following Hermon Hutchens Kingdom participants!
From The Shire of Beck. One of this lad’s favorite battle books this year is “I Freddie”.

Another young knight from the Shire of Beck also approved “I Freddie” as a great read!

From Anderson Shire, “Gooseberry Park” is one of this young knight’s favorite battle books this year .

Our first maiden in waiting to reach the first battle goal and attend the swimming party comes from Saint Crepin. She enjoyed reading “Jeremy Thatcher Dragon Catcher”.

From the tiny village of Guthrie comes a powerful knight experienced in reading battles. He challenges anyone to read “House On Hackman’s Hill”, by Joan Lowery Nixon.

This lass from Saint Crepin challenges you to read one of her favorite books this year. “The Anybodies” by N.E. Bode.

“The Anybodies” MUST be a great read. This maiden in waiting also gives it a thumbs up as one of this year’s best battle books.

I can’t wait to read “The Anybodies”! Another lass from the village of Guthrie gives it a thumbs up as one of her favorite 7 battle books so far.

A newly appointed knight from Anderson Shire joins the Hermon Hutchens Kingdom of elite battle book readers. His favorite battle book so far: The Penderwicks!

And yet another rogue knight from the shire of Anderson joins the Hermon Hutchens League.

Our annual Battle Book Slumber Party wrapped up last night. 21 kids were able to attend this year’s event. The students had to read all 15 of the books and receive 80% or higher on their AR quizzes.
We started out the evening swimming, followed by a school wide Easter Egg Hunt. Bookmark crafts, time in the gym, the computer lab, and lots of great snacks pretty much took care of the evening. We wrapped things up with three rounds of Sardines, a hide and seek game that covered the whole school.
Great Snacks!

Those are Easter Eggs Hidden In That T-Shirt!

Time For Bed!

Thanks to all the amazing help from parents and volunteers. You helped make this celebration one of the best!

This year HHES students in kindergarten through 6th grade can get “Wrapped Up In Reading” the 2008-2009 Alaska Battle of the Books. Swing by the HHES Library to pick up a brochure that gives the kindergarten through 6th grade titles the students will be reading this year, or print out the list from the Alaska Battle Book website above.
Students in 3rd – 6th grade who have read 6 battle books and received 80% or better on Accelerated Reader quizzes will be invited to attend the annual swimming pizza party Friday November 21st.
HHES District Battles and the annual Battle Book Slumber Party will be in January for all students on the 3rd/4th & 5th/6th district battle teams, as well as students who have read all 15 books and received 80% or better on Accelerated Reader quizzes.
State level battles will be February 23rd – 26th.
Here’s Sammy the Snake to help us “Get Wrapped Up In Reading” this year’s 2007-2008 Battle Books.

We’re always looking for parent volunteers to come in once a week to quiz kids on battle book titles/authors and questions from the books. Please contact Barb Bryson at 835-4728 if you’re interested in helping out.

Friday, February 9th, the VCS District 1st & 2nd place winning battle book teams in 3rd/4th & 5th/6th , along with those students that have read all of this year’s 15 battle books, were invited to an overnight at our library.
The evening kicked off in the “Easy Section” with a skit performed by the infamous Almy & Park Duo. The story was about a nasty king who wanted to destroy all the books in the royal kingdom to make room for all his video games. The king’s loyal subject pleads for the books not to be destroyed!

When the king consumes some poison from the royal goblet it’s up to the assistance of the audience to come up with the names of battle book tites or the king will die. The spell is broken and the king learns the errors of his ways allowing all the books to remain in the royal library for the reading pleasure of the kingdom, and the king lived happily ever after. It was a great way to kick off the evening!
The remainder of the night included sledding on the snowhill outside the school, a mock battle, free time in the gym and computer lab.

We wrapped up the evening with a serious game of “Sardines”, hiding though out the school in our p.j’s.
Oh! We can’t forget all the great snacks and breakfast goodies sent by the parents! AND…
We can’t forget to thank Mo & Steve Radotitch, and Val Hebert for sharing the fun as well as the work by spending the evening with us!

Yummy fruit kabobs sent by the Nowak family. Nice smile too!

Oh! And we can’t forget the notorious balloon raid that the boys set off at about midnight near the girl’s tent! (This was the trial run!)
Yes! They actually did sleep at some point in the evening! Or shall I say, early morning…..

Nice try Mo Radatitch & Val Hebert! Do you really think you guys are going to sleep?!?

That’s all folks!
