Get A Clue @ Your Library

What do KVAK, (our local radio station), the HHES PTA, the Valdez Literacy Council, the Valdez Consortium Library and HHES Library all have in common? They are sponsoring the reading promotional “Get A Clue @ Your Library”!

Each week KVAK Radio reads a hook and asks a challenge question from a well known children’s book. The hook is also announced at school. Kids have all week to come to the library, read the book, and answer the weekly question.

Friday there is a drawing. The first child with the correct answer is invited to the library to pick out a webkin, compliments of the HHES PTA, and a “Get A Clue” T-shirt, compliments of the Valdez Consortium Library.

 

2nd Grade Students Get Wrapped Up In Reading

For the past 2 months students in kindergarten, first and second grade have been reading this year’s Alaska Battle of the Books.  Not only have they been reading the books and taking AR quizzes, but they have been having practice battles during weekly library classes.

Today, to wrap up all the hard work, 2nd grade classes formed battle teams and we hosted a mock battle at the library.  Kindergarten and first grade classes were invited to watch the fun.

Nine 2nd grade teams of 4 kids took the challenge.  We wrapped up the event with the movie “Beverly Hills Chihuahua”, and popcorn & juice provided by the HHES PTA.
