Reading Cafe: Back By Popular Demand

November 25, 2008

Mrs. Wallace’s 2nd graders reopened the Reading Cafe for the 2nd year. Students collected beginning level literature books that had something to do with food.  Students had a few weeks to practice reading the stories, create menus with the titles of the books and set up their classroom for business.  Parents, teachers, and students all came down to the Reading Cafe to enjoy cookies and juice and a good story.  Thanks Mrs. Wallace for this wonderful reading incentive project!

A Great Read For Thanksgiving!

November 17, 2008

“Molly’s Pilgrim” is a modern day Pilgrim story that may help bring our own Thanksgiving alive for some children.  Molly and her mother have left their home land and come to America so they can celebrate their religion in freedom.  But Molly is “different” from her fellow classmates and is teased because of it.  This is a great quick read by author Barbara Cohen that might open some great discussion on a variety of topics and levels.

The December Read For “The Lunch Bunch” is…

November 17, 2008

“The Lunch Bunch” are a group of kids who meet once a month to discuss books.  This will be our third book this year.  It’s pretty low key.  We munch on lunch together while discussing aspects of the story and whether we like the author’s style of writing or not.  Oh, and did I mention there’s always some kind of dessert?!?

This month the group  decided it was time for an animal story.  After much deliberation the pick was “Child of the Wolves”.  Though all 10 copies have rapidly been check out, come on by and we will put the book on hold for you if you want to join the group.  We’ll discuss the story December 17th.  Plenty of time to get this adventure story read.  Come join us!  Teachers and staff are  welcome!
