Valdez Literacy Council Supports HHES Library

October 28, 2008

Once again, big thanks go out to the Valdez Literacy Council who allowed the library staff to purchase $250.00 worth of books at the recent Scholastic Book Fair. Take a look at a few of the books Mrs. Benda has recently cataloged and are flying off the shelves.

Avalanche Safety Coming To HHES Library

October 28, 2008

Back by popular demand, Sara Carter will be coming to the HHES Library in December to present avalanche safety tips to 5th/6th Grade Students.

Sara popped into the library recently to donate a couple of avalanche safety books to our library.  Thanks Sara!  We can’t wait to have you join us in December!

Another Battle Book Reader To Cheer About.

October 26, 2008

Here’s our very own HHES Cleopatra, Hailie, showing off her favortie battle book this year,  “The Tale of Despereaux”.  She said it was a hard decision though.  There were so many good ones to choose from.  Congratulation Hailie!  You’ll be joining us for the Battle Book Slumber Party in February, as well as November’s Pizza/Swim party.

Budding Author At HHES

October 26, 2008

This 2nd grader has written and illustrated a story called, “The Turtle Who Couldn’t Wait Until Halloween”. Now she’s editing it.  Her teacher, Mrs. Wallace, has a “blank book” ready to go for the final project.  A “blank book” is a hard back book that is empty and ready for someone to create a book.  Good Luck Cassie!  We can’t wait to read  your finished book!

Kid Picks: Hot Reads @ HHES Library!

October 26, 2008

Take it from Jasman.  This is the best book in the world.  If you like ghost stories, this one’s a must.

Brielle has her own favorite ghost story.  Check out “Deep, Dark, and Dangerous”.

Just before summer begins, 13-year-old Ali finds an odd photograph in the attic. She knows the two children in it are her mother, Claire, and her aunt Dulcie. But who’s the third person, the one who’s been torn out of the picture?

Mrs. Lomax Recommends Gooney The Fabulous!

October 24, 2008

Take it from Mrs. Lomax.  Lois Lowry’s,  “Gooney The Fabulous”,  would be a great read aloud as well as a follow up writing project.  Keep reading for a few more details about the book.  It’s available @ your library.

Mrs. Pidgeon has been reading Aesop’s fables to her second grade class. What’s a fable? Well, it’s a story that has animals as characters, and it teaches you something important, and . . . Once again it is Gooney Bird Greene who knows how to turn lessons into fun. She has an idea. A fabulous idea! What if each child creates his or her own fable, and tells it to the class? One by one Mrs. Pidgeon’s students create costumes and stories and morals and excitement. Everyone except Nicholas. What on earth is making Nicholas so unhappy? Leave it to Gooney Bird, of course, to help him solve his problem . . . in a truly fabulous way.

We Have A Winner!!

October 23, 2008

We’re proud to help spread the news that Egyptian Pharaoh Caleb, is the first student at HHES to read all 15 of this year’s battle books!  Congratulations Caleb!! “Ramona’s World” was his pick for the best read.

It’s not too late to “Get Wrapped Up In Reading”!  In 24 more days any 3rd-6th grade students who have read  6 of this year’s battle books will be invited to attend the annual  swimming/pizza party. Good luck! AND…… Happy Reading!

Meet The Willoughbys!

October 17, 2008

In this tongue-in-cheek take on classic themes in children’s literature, the four Willoughby children set about to become “deserving orphans” after their neglectful parents embark on a treacherous around-the-world adventure, leaving them in the care of an odious nanny.

This potential read aloud has been given a 4 star rating and now can be checked out @ your library thanks to the Valdez Literacy Council!

Graphic Biographies, New Science Books, & More!

October 13, 2008

Here’s one guy that LOVES our Graphic Biographies! Seth has read every one of them in our library.  Graphic Biographies tell the life story of famous Americans in comic book format.  These seem to be an especially big hit with boys.

Mrs. Benda just finished up cataloging this wonderful new science series published by World Book Encyclopedia.  They highlight science projects and models kids and teachers can build themselves.  Bright, bold, and colorful photographs make these books eye-catching, fun and  interesting. We think will be a big hit.

MORE SCIENCE BOOKS! A set of 16 science and nature books covering a wide variety of topics are on display and ready for check out.  A nice table of contents and index, plus additional recommended resource  make this science series good research tools for students and curriculum support for the classroom.

Garfield books  are still one of the top 10 checkout items at the HHES Library.  Nothing like Garfield to get kids reading!
