Say Hi To Our Tech Savvy Mrs. Benda!

August 29, 2008

Welcome back to the 2008-2009 school year Mrs. Benda!

What would we do without our techno wonder-woman!

Mrs. Benda not only is at the ready to check in and out books at a moments notice, (as well get those materials back on the shelf quickly), BUT she’s the brains behind keeping those student computers working and the printers printing.

Oh, and did I mention that she’s the one who catalogs all the new books and donated items so we have a method to find all the great reads?

AND she knows how to find just the right book for those teachers and kiddos popping in and out of our library on a regualr basis. Thanks Mrs. Benda for everything you do for the HHES staff and students!

Vote For Your Favorite Book!

August 26, 2008

Knowing the 2008 Presidential elections would be coming quickly down the pike, last spring we purchased a variety of new books that will assist teachers in teaching kids the U.S. electiion process. Many of these books are hot off the press. Let us know what you think!

New Eye Witness DVD’s For Our Library!

August 26, 2008

She may look like she’s snoozing on the job, but in our book, Mrs. Good-Michaud is the cat’s pajamas! Thanks for donating several Eye Witness DVD’s to the HHES Library! The kids and teachers love them!

A Big Thanks To The Valdez Museum!

August 25, 2008

The Valdez City School Libraries would like to take this opportunity to thank the Valdez Museum for donating to each school library a copy of the recently produced DVD, “Between the Glacier and the Sea”. “Told through personal accounts of survivors, this movie dispels myths and reveals untold stories that provide answers to why the city of Valdez was built in such a precarious location…”

Thanks Steve for your hard work with the production of this important resource about the history of our community!

Meet Amanda: HHES Library Student Aide

August 14, 2008

Amanda will be working in the HHES Library as a student aide for the 2nd year running. We are lucky to have Amanda on our staff. She’s a hard worker with a positive attitude and seems to enjoy being part of the library team. Amanda does a variety of jobs for us. She shelves materials, delivers things to teacheres, creates bulletin boards, helps with reading incentive programs, and the list goes on….

If you ask Amanda what she enjoys doing in her free time you’re likely to hear about her personal library. Stahley loves to read and always has her nose in a book. She even began arranging her collection of books in Dewey Decimal order this summer. Spoken like a true librarian!

NoveList K-8 : Looking For Your Next Good Book To Read?

August 14, 2008

Thanks to funding from our state, all Alaska school libraries have access to NoveList K-8. This is a great resource for teachers, students, and parents created by EBSCO. You can search for books by title, author and subject and locate a wide variety of award winning books from kindergarten through 8th grade.

Books have annotations which means there is a brief write up telling you about the story.

Valdez City Schools students are able to access NoveList K-8 through the Alaska Digital Pipeline. You will need to contact the HHES Library staff for the user name and password to access this excellent reading source.

Check out the site and give us feedback on whether you are able to get in and what you think of it.

Battle of the Books: Get Wrapped Up In Reading

August 13, 2008

This year HHES students in kindergarten through 6th grade can get “Wrapped Up In Reading” the 2008-2009 Alaska Battle of the Books. Swing by the HHES Library to pick up a brochure that gives the kindergarten through 6th grade titles the students will be reading this year, or print out the list from the Alaska Battle Book website above.

Students in 3rd – 6th grade who have read 6 battle books and received 80% or better on Accelerated Reader quizzes will be invited to attend the annual swimming pizza party Friday November 21st.

HHES District Battles and the annual Battle Book Slumber Party will be in January for all students on the 3rd/4th & 5th/6th district battle teams, as well as students who have read all 15 books and received 80% or better on Accelerated Reader quizzes.

State level battles will be February 23rd – 26th.

Here’s Sammy the Snake to help us “Get Wrapped Up In Reading” this year’s 2007-2008 Battle Books.

We’re always looking for parent volunteers to come in once a week to quiz kids on battle book titles/authors and questions from the books.   Please contact Barb Bryson at 835-4728 if you’re interested in helping out.

GET SMART! @YOURLIBRARY

August 8, 2008

Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year at Hermon Hutchens Elementary School Library!

Students, teachers, and parents!! We encourage you to swing by our library and check out all the new books,DVDs, and other library resources that have arrived over the summer and…. Get Smart @ your library!

Many thanks to Kristin Hayes for volunteering her time and putting her artistic talents to work creating some of this year’s library bulletin boards including the “Get Smart” theme.

Oh! Did I mention Kristen’s kids pitched in too by putting books on display, and kept scissors, staplers, tape, and other items at our fingertips?

But everyone needs a little break now and then. I can’t think of a better way to kick back for a little while!
