Researcher At Work @yourlibrary!

February 14, 2007

This young 3rd grader loves learning facts about the planets. Over the past 2 months he has checked out almost every one of the books in our newest series of books on the planets and collected interesting facts. This is all on his own time mind you. Yesterday he presented me with a 4 page report on what he has learned. Well done Mr. P! We’ll keep you posted on his next research adventure.preston-01.jpg

Tenacious Reading Pays Off!

February 14, 2007

This young lady began reading the Tamora Pierce book: “Lady Knight”, about ten weeks ago. Every week during library class she would bring it back to be renewed. This is a pretty hefty read for a 4th grader. Congratulations Miss “M”!

Battle Book Slumber Party Another Hit!

February 9, 2007

Friday, February 9th, the VCS District 1st & 2nd place winning battle book teams in 3rd/4th & 5th/6th , along with those students that have read all of this year’s 15 battle books, were invited to an overnight at our library. sp1-01.jpg

The evening kicked off in the “Easy Section” with a skit performed by the infamous Almy & Park Duo. The story was about a nasty king who wanted to destroy all the books in the royal kingdom to make room for all his video games. The king’s loyal subject pleads for the books not to be destroyed!

When the king consumes some poison from the royal goblet it’s up to the assistance of the audience to come up with the names of battle book tites or the king will die. The spell is broken and the king learns the errors of his ways allowing all the books to remain in the royal library for the reading pleasure of the kingdom, and the king lived happily ever after. It was a great way to kick off the evening!

The remainder of the night included sledding on the snowhill outside the school, a mock battle, free time in the gym and computer lab.

We wrapped up the evening with a serious game of “Sardines”, hiding though out the school in our p.j’s.

Oh! We can’t forget all the great snacks and breakfast goodies sent by the parents! AND…

We can’t forget to thank Mo & Steve Radotitch, and Val Hebert for sharing the fun as well as the work by spending the evening with us!

Yummy fruit kabobs sent by the Nowak family. Nice smile too!

Yes! They actually did sleep at some point in the evening! Or shall I say, early morning…..

Here’s a sight I love to see in our library. Parents taking time from their busy schedule to read to their child and his friends before the school day kicks off.morningreaders-01.jpg

Accelerated Reader: A Great Reading Incentive Program!

February 5, 2007

Crystal Nowak is the VCS Accelerated Reader Coordinator. Thanks to support from Title I funds, our district uses Accelerated Reader as a supplimentary way to encourage kids to read. This program uses quizzes and points for it’s incentive program. Meet Crystal Nowak!

Each quarter 3rd-6th grade classes begin with a “clean slate”. As students read books, take quizzes on the book, and receive points, their class builds up points. At the end of each quarter the 3rd/4th & 5th/6th grade class with the most “AR” points receives a class party.

Parents of younger students are also using Acceletrated Reader as a way to encourage their children to read regulary as well as improve reading skills.

Dane’s mother tells me he is working at home to earn 25 points in AR. As his prize, he will receive a Lego Star Wars Set. He also uses an online reading incentive program called “Book Adventure”. Every 1000 points he gets earns him a Friday night “Choice” of a family game, activity, dinner, or a movie. He is working hard at reading and he loves it!.
