VCS District Battles At HHES

January 21, 2007

Friday, January 26th the HHES School had district level Battle of the Books competition to determine which teams will represent our district at the state battles on February 14th and 15th. We had 5 teams participating at the 3rd/4th grade level. Congratulations to the first place “Derifield Juniors”, as well as the great job by all the other participants. We had more students reading more 3rd/4th grade battle books year than ever before. Hats off to the teachers and parents who encouraged their kids to read a a variety of literature in this state reading incentive program.

During the first three Friday’s of January the Valdez City School Library Staff is doing presentations to staff members at all three schools on World Book Encyclopedia Online. This online service has lots of great things to offer students as well as teachers. Here are a couple of pictures from yesterday’s presentation at the George Gilson Jr. High School. Teresa and I took turns showing a variety of services and weblinks available using a computer and a multi-media projector. Teachers each had a computer to follow along with and explore the site on their own as well.

Our jr. high science teacher immediately took this great online service to the next level by plugging facts, graphs, and diagrams from World Book Online into a powerpoint which she plans to use with her classes next week. She had even gone the extra mile and had already cited the source. With copyright being such an important issue, I was pleased to see that!

K/1/2 Battle Book Program Up And Running!

January 7, 2007

K/1/2 Battle of the Books: “Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds” kicked off on Friday! Each classroom has a set of this years books to read. Students will also be introduced to the stories and authors during their library class times. Kids have been encouraged to check out the books from the public and school libraries to read at home as well.

This year we’re trying a new idea. Each battle book has an AR quiz. Kids who read the books can keep track of how well they know the books with a quick quiz. Our new Accelerated Reader Coordinator, Crystal Nowak, has offered to work with the classes so that all students may take a quiz from a book they have heard in class. We also have 5th/6th grade students willing to come down and read the stories to the 1st/2nd grade kids in the afternoons Monday – Thursday. Don’t forget, reading these great stories can go towards “Book Worm Club” points!

2nd grade classes will each select a team of 4 students from their class to compete against each other at a little “Mock” battle in February.
