Check Out Mrs. Wallace’s Reading Cafe!!

November 20, 2006

To celebrate this week’s 2006 Children’s Book Week: “More Books Please”, Barb Wallace’s 2nd grade class invited parents & students to their classroom book cafe.

cafe1-01-011.jpgjenna-01.jpg Wallace initially checked out a variety of picture books from our library all revolving around the theme of food. Typed menus offering the tasty treat of each book title on the menu. Students decorated their menus bkcafe3-01.jpg
and spent the next 2 weeks practicing reading each book.

price-01.jpgbkcafe7-011.jpg Parents jumped on board providing cookies and juice for the reading waiters & waitresses to share with their customers as they read the stories each customer requested.

mattie-01.jpg reading-01.jpgThe Reading Cafe was packed all week with parents, siblings, school board members and students from other classes. Mrs. Wallace says that the event was such a success, the cafe will open again next fall during Children’s Book Week.

I’d like to introduce one of my current favorite authors.

Wendelin Van Draanen

She writes a wide variety of literature for upper elemetary and junior high age kids. Her style is fast paced, upbeat and fun to read. I can’t keep “Shredderman: Secret Identity” on the shelf. This is a 5th/6th grade battle book this year so we have 7 copies of the book. All are checked out!! The “Sammy Keyes” detective mysteries are just as entertaining. Swing by the library, we’ll have her books up on display. That is, if there are any left!

Born To Read

November 1, 2006

This mother/son duo come to our library every morning for a little “one on one” reading time.

Just the two of them spending time together. They slip in after the bell rings for the school day to officially begin, and before the first class comes into the library. Hats off to this mom for instilling the love of reading in her little boy from a very early age. “Children who read, succeed!”.

Alyeska Helps Out!

November 1, 2006

Once again Alyeska gave a little support to the HHES Library. We were trying to come up with hall passes for our library club members when someone suggested lanyards that could be worn around their neck with an official name tag: “HHES Library Club” followed by their name. It was a great idea. We got in touch with Betty,

now working with public relations for the pipeline company, and by early afternoon she came walking into the library with enough lanyards for each student to have their own, and a few to spare. Thanks Alyeska!

HHES Library Club Up And Running!

November 1, 2006

This year we have 14, sixth grade students signed up to help out in our library. Club members come to the library once a week during a morning or lunch recess to help out. They tackle a wide variety of tasks from straightening books on shelves to setting up displays and taking materials to teachers.

Each student has picked their own area of the library to keep “spruced” up. These kids do a wonderful job every year and are a huge help! Thanks club members for volunteering your time @ your library!
