Give A Round Of Applause!

October 23, 2006

Judy and Mo are two parents who spend a couple of hours each week helping out in our library.

Our library has a wide range of projects and tasks that need to get completed on a regular basis. Judy is currently helping label Accelterated Reader books so kids are able to tell which ones have quizzes. Mo comes in regulary once or twice a week before school and checks in and out books as well as puts materials back on the shelves. (Thanks ladies for sharing your time in our library! You are appreciated!)

We’re currently looking for someone who wants to help label our fiction section of the library so kids can easily locate specific books by the author’s last name. If you think working once or twice a week in our library would be a fun way to support HHES, please give a call. 835-4728.

VDZ Literacy Council Supports Our Library

October 23, 2006

Once again the Valdez Literacy Council continues to support our library. This fall the council let the library use their Scholastic bonus points to purchase over $500 worth of books from their fall book fair.

We used the opportunity to select the “HOT” authors and book titles that kids are excited to check out from HHES Library and that we can never seem to keep on our shelves. We also used the opportunity to replace some of those books that have been “loved” to death and round off some of the series such as “A Series Of Unfortunate Events”, “Junie B. Jones” and “The Island Books” that are continuallly checked out. Thanks ladies for your ongoing support of literacy and our library.

For The Love Of Reading

October 23, 2006

This dynamic mother/daughter team visits our library every morning before classes get underway.

Some mornings they slip in and just pick out a new picture book to read together in the evening. Some days, when they have a few extra minutes, they sit down in the library and enjoy a book together before the school day kicks off. What a wonderful way for a child to begin their day and instill the love of reading.

Author of the Month: Jon Scieszka

October 3, 2006

Author Jon Scieszka says, “I read everything — comic books, newspapers, cereal boxes, poems — anything with writing on it. My favorite things to read are fairy tales, myths, and legends. When I’m not reading, I listen to music, watch cartoons, and sit in my chair and just think about stuff. I’ve always thought about being an author. One of the first books I read was Green Eggs and Ham, by Dr. Seuss. It made me realize that books could be goofy. It’s the book that made The Stinky Cheese Man possible!”

Two of Scieszka’s books are Battle Books this year.  2nd grade level, “True Story of the Three Little Pigs”, a very funny spin-off of the traditional “Three Little Pigs”  and “Da Wild, Da Crazy, Da Vinci” a 3rd/4th grade battle book.  These books make great read alouds. Have your child pick one up and try a nightly read together time.
